Lung Cancer: The Devastating Disease Lung cancer is a disgusting disease that many have died from. It is the largest single cause of cancer deaths in America. It causes more deaths than colon, breast and pancreatic cancer combined. People shouldn’t have to suffer from this disease. We have to prevent any more cases of lung cancer. What is lung cancer? It is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells that start off in one or both of the lungs. The abnormal cells do not develop into healthy tissue, they divide rapidly and form into tumors. As tumors become stronger and bigger it undermines the lungs ability to produce oxygen in the bloodstream. Now what causes lung cancer? Well the number one leading cause of lung cancer is smoking. According to www.webmd.com ,around ninety percent of lung cancers arise because of tobacco use. The risk of lung cancer increases with the number of cigarettes over time. Pipe and cigar can also cause lung cancer, although the risk is not as high as cigarettes. While someone who smokes one pack a day has a risk for the development of lung cancer that is twenty-five higher than a non-smoker, pipe and cigar smokers have a risk of lung cancer that is about five times that of a non-smoker. What are the symptoms of lung cancer? Intense coughing, shortness of breath or a change in the color of sputum are some of the many symptoms.
